Landmark Lancet Study Links Short-Term Air Pollution Exposure to Increased Hospital Admissions for Cancers and Mental Health Disorders
A new multicountry study published in The Lancet Planetary Health has found that short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with an 8% higher risk of hospitalization from any cause for every 10 micrograms per cubic meter increase in PM2.5 concentration. The strongest associations were observed for malignant neoplasms (cancers) and mental disorders, suggesting broader health consequences of air pollution beyond respiratory issues.
