University of Auckland researchers investigate hidden inflammation to prevent recurrence of sight-threatening eye disease.
Researchers at the University of Auckland are launching a new project to investigate whether hidden inflammation, not addressed by standard corticosteroid treatments, is responsible for the recurrence of non-infectious uveitis, a sight-threatening autoimmune eye disease. The study, backed by a $150,000 Health Research Council Explorer Grant, will test if adding the drug tonabersat to standard steroid treatment can reduce relapses. Approximately 40% of individuals with non-infectious uveitis experience a recurrence within 10 years, increasing their risk of permanent vision loss.
