Study Finds AI-Suggested Care Plans Significantly More Expensive Than Physician Plans

A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) found that care plans suggested by 24 different AI systems averaged $314 per patient visit, which is 3.2 times higher than the $97 average for documented physician plans. The increased cost primarily stemmed from additional diagnostic testing and specialist referrals recommended by the AI.
