New Research Reveals Neurons Routinely Break and Repair DNA During Brain Development

Researchers from Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (WPI-iCeMS) have made a surprising discovery: developing neurons intentionally break their own DNA during their migration through tight spaces in the brain, and then efficiently repair it. This process, involving double-strand breaks, is a normal part of brain cortex development and may offer new insights into neurological conditions if the repair mechanisms are compromised.
