Ancient Volcanic Event Reshaped Oceanic Plate Structure

Analysis of seismic waves has revealed that the immense volcanic activity forming the Ontong Java Plateau over 100 million years ago profoundly altered the oceanic plate beneath it. Researchers discovered a complex internal structure of horizontal layers and vertical magma channels. Unusually slow seismic waves suggest that deep-rising magma chemically modified the plate.
