New framework for evaluating arch dam abutment safety considers spatiotemporal fault variations

A new study published in the journal Applied Sciences introduces a comprehensive framework for the life-cycle safety evaluation of arch dam abutments. The research, led by Jugang Luo and colleagues, addresses limitations in conventional studies by incorporating the discrete, localized distribution of intact rock blocks within natural faults and their spatiotemporal variation in mechanical parameters. This framework aims to provide a more accurate assessment of seismic hazards and long-term operational safety for arch dams, which are critical infrastructure.
