Scientists Trace Origin of Human Eyes to Ancient 'Cyclops' Ancestor
New research from Lund University and the University of Sussex proposes that the earliest vertebrate ancestor, living nearly 600 million years ago, passed through a cyclops-like stage with a single eye. This ancient median eye is believed to be the evolutionary precursor to the pineal gland in modern vertebrates, which regulates sleep. The findings are published in Current Biology.
