NASA's Juno Mission Reveals Io's Subsurface is Hotter Than Predicted

Data from two recent flybys by NASA's Juno spacecraft indicate that Jupiter's moon Io has subsurface temperatures exceeding previous models. Despite Io being the most volcanically active body in the solar system, driven by Jupiter's tidal flexing, the new readings will help refine models of internal heat transfer through its crust and where it escapes. The mission also found surprisingly smoother surface stretches than anticipated.
