CERN's Large Hadron Collider Begins 4-Year Shutdown for Major Upgrade to High-Luminosity LHC

CERN has officially switched off the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to commence Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), a four-year period dedicated to a $1.5 billion hardware upgrade. This transformation will convert the LHC into the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), aiming to increase collision rates and data generation by up to tenfold to enable more precise studies of the Higgs boson and search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model.
