New Research Highlights Inherent Trade-offs in Electoral System Design

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen have demonstrated that electoral systems face inherent trade-offs, unable to perfectly balance local representation, proportional national results, and a fixed-size parliament when multiple parties compete. Published in Annals of Operations Research, this analysis highlights fundamental limitations in democratic design. A new voting method is proposed to potentially mitigate these trade-offs and achieve fairer outcomes.
