MIT Scientists Uncover Why Molybdenum-Based Nitrogenases Are More Efficient
Two new studies from MIT have resolved a long-standing mystery regarding nitrogenases, the enzymes that convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. Researchers found that molybdenum, present in the most efficient class of these enzymes, doesn't directly bind nitrogen but instead helps nearby iron atoms grip nitrogen more tightly, facilitating the initial bond-breaking step.
