Chemists Discover New Pathway for Bioluminescence Production

Stanford-led research has identified an unexpected mechanism by which mechanical force generates light in bioluminescent molecules called dioxetanes, which are responsible for the glow of fireflies and plankton. Contrary to previous understanding that heat breaks oxygen bonds first, computational modeling revealed that mechanical force ruptures the carbon-carbon bond in the dioxetane molecule's core structure first. This discovery could lead to improved stress sensors and a deeper understanding of natural luminescence.
