LiDAR Technology Uncovers Large Ancient Amazonian Civilization

A new study published in Nature, utilizing LiDAR, has revealed the extensive scale of the Aquiry civilization in southwestern Amazonia. This society, active from approximately 600 B.C. to 850 A.D., spanned 183,000 square kilometers and may have supported 1.25 to 3 million people. This discovery significantly revises previous understandings of pre-Columbian Amazonian populations and their complex organization.
