NASA's New Horizons Mission Reveals Pluto's Heart May Be 'Bleeding' Liquid Nitrogen

New research, based on data from NASA's New Horizons mission, suggests that Pluto's prominent heart-shaped glacier, Sputnik Planitia, may be slowly leaking liquid nitrogen onto its surface. Dark streaks observed along the rim of the heart are interpreted as stains from liquid nitrogen that seeped through cracks, flowed, and refroze, indicating ongoing geological activity on the dwarf planet. The findings were published in The Planetary Science Journal.
