Subsurface Bacteria Discovered to Trap Toxic Uranium

Scientists have discovered that bacteria residing deep underground possess the ability to effectively trap toxic uranium, thereby preventing its dispersal. In controlled experiments, providing glycerol to microbes in uranium-contaminated mine water resulted in approximately 95% of the dissolved uranium being removed rapidly. This finding presents a promising new bioremediation approach for mitigating uranium contamination in diverse environmental settings.
