Siberian Methane Emissions Threaten Global Climate Goals

A new analysis led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences indicates that increasing methane emissions from Siberia could counteract 20% of global methane reduction targets by 2050. The study, published in Science, found Siberian annual methane emissions rose by 12.0 ± 1.9 teragrams between 2010 and 2023. This increase is attributed to warming-induced fires and methanogenesis, with distinct regional drivers, posing a significant challenge to climate change mitigation efforts.
