New findings, published in The Planetary Science Journal, suggest that Pluto's Sputnik Planitia, a deep basin filled with frozen nitrogen, may be actively 'bleeding' liquid nitrogen onto its surface. Dark streaks observed along the heart's rim are interpreted as stains left by liquid nitrogen that seeped through cracks, flowed, and refroze.
