Stanford Researchers Use AI to Design Functional Bacteriophages Capable of Overcoming Bacterial Resistance
Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute have utilized generative AI models (Evo 1 and Evo 2) to design complete bacteriophage genomes from scratch. These AI-designed viruses proved functional, capable of infecting and killing bacteria, including strains that had developed resistance to naturally occurring phages. This breakthrough, initially reported in a bioRxiv preprint in September 2025 and now published in Science, demonstrates the potential of genome-scale AI in developing new therapies for antibiotic-resistant infections, while also raising important biosafety and biosecurity considerations.
