Novel coral species discovered in Costa Rica's deep-sea environment

Scientists exploring Costa Rica's deep-sea seamounts have identified a new coral species, Laurinque elenya, which is so distinct it required a new family classification. This bright yellow, tree-like coral thrives at depths of 360 to 529 meters and was often found covered by brittle stars. The discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of unexplored deep-sea ecosystems.
