MIT AI Forecasts Extreme Weather Events Without Historical Data

MIT engineers have developed an AI tool that can forecast extreme weather events, such as severe rainfall, without relying on historical disaster data for training. This new method, called Extreme Event Aware or η-learning, generates statistically plausible maps of events that may not have occurred in a region's past but are still possible, providing estimates for their duration, intensity, and affected area.
