New research published in Biointerphases reveals that the nanoscopic hairs, or setulae, covering the bodies of many lizards, such as geckos, play a crucial role in preventing water loss. Through computational modeling, scientists found that these microstructures trap air, creating a boundary layer that reduces evaporation and helps the lizards survive in dry shrublands.
