Rare, widespread snow blankets Chile's Atacama Desert due to winter storms

Back-to-back winter storms in August 2026 brought rare and widespread snowfall to northern Chile, extending from the Andes mountains to near the Pacific coast. This unusual meteorological event in one of the world's driest regions was captured and reported by the NASA Earth Observatory.
