Researchers Induce Novel Magnetic State in Ultrathin Ruthenium Dioxide

Researchers have successfully induced altermagnetism, a recently theorized magnetic state, in ultrathin ruthenium dioxide films. This material, typically nonmagnetic in bulk, exhibited electron patterns consistent with altermagnetism when thinned to a few atomic layers and subjected to strain. This discovery could pave the way for advancements in future electronic devices.
