NASA's Roman Space Telescope Launches, Begins Journey to L2 and Initial Deployments

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket on August 30, 2026, commencing its three-month journey to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2. Initial deployments, including solar panels and the lower instrument sun shade, were confirmed an hour and 23 minutes after liftoff. The mission aims to survey the infrared sky to study dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets with a field of view significantly larger than Hubble's. The European Space Agency (ESA) contributed key hardware and will provide deep-space communications support.
