The Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph (MOONS) at ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile has achieved "First Light." This new instrument can simultaneously study 1000 objects in red and infrared light, enabling astronomers to investigate the Milky Way's core and the formation and evolution of distant galaxies over 13 billion years.
