UNH Launches Advanced Cabled Ocean Observatory in Gulf of Maine

The University of New Hampshire, with partners, has activated the $6.2 million Appledore Cabled Ocean Observatory in the Gulf of Maine. Deployed in August 2026, this system uses subsea fiber-optic telemetry and real-time acoustic/oceanographic sensors. It will provide continuous power and data streams to monitor marine mammals, ocean noise, water chemistry, and climate dynamics, expanding the regional Atlantic Ecology Observation Network.
