CERN's Large Hadron Collider Begins Long Shutdown 3 for High-Luminosity Upgrade

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN has been switched off to commence Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), a major maintenance and upgrade phase expected to last up to four years. This shutdown is crucial for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HiLumi LHC) project, which will significantly enhance the LHC's performance by replacing over 1.2 kilometers of the accelerator with new systems to increase luminosity and enable more particle collisions. The accelerator complex is anticipated to restart gradually from 2028, with full scientific operation of the HiLumi LHC targeted for 2030.
