Astronomers Detect Ultra-Fast Black Hole Winds in 'Dead' Galaxy

Astronomers from ICE-CSIC, utilizing X-ray and optical data, have detected ultra-fast winds, moving at 7% the speed of light, emanating from a central black hole in a galaxy that ceased forming stars nine billion years ago. This marks the first observation of such powerful winds in a 'dead' galaxy, suggesting that black holes can remain active and influence their environment long after star formation has concluded. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about black hole activity in such galaxies.
