New Research Challenges Prevailing Theory on Declining Star Formation

A recent study led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences disputes the long-held theory that a shortage of cosmic gas is the primary cause for the universe's declining star formation. Utilizing data from China's FAST and the US's DESI instruments, the research indicates that while star birth has significantly decreased over 4.5 billion years, the fundamental gas supply has only slightly diminished. This finding, published in Nature Astronomy, suggests other factors may be more influential in how galaxies mature and age.
