Glaciers' Accelerated Flow Drives Polar Ice Loss

A new study from the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (IMBIE), supported by ESA and NASA, reveals Greenland and Antarctica have lost 11 trillion tonnes of ice since the 1970s. Published in Scientific Data, the research highlights that faster-flowing glaciers, not just surface melting, are a significant driver of this loss. This contributes approximately a quarter of global sea-level rise, underscoring a critical aspect of climate change.
