Faster-Flowing Glaciers Drive Decades of Polar Ice Loss, Contributing to Sea-Level Rise

A comprehensive international study, the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (IMBIE), supported by ESA and NASA, has revealed that Greenland and Antarctica have lost a combined 11 trillion tonnes of ice since the 1970s, contributing over three centimeters to global sea-level rise. The findings, published in the Nature journal Scientific Data, highlight that the acceleration of ice loss is primarily due to glaciers flowing faster into the ocean, rather than just surface melting.
