NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter discovers a massive, recently-formed crater on the Moon, dubbed "McGetchin," measuring 222 meters wide.

This crater, formed in spring 2024 by a comet or asteroid impact, is the largest new crater ever discovered in the solar system, an event estimated to occur only once a century or longer. The discovery, confirmed by LRO data in August 2025 and detailed images last year, provides crucial information for understanding lunar impacts and surface evolution, especially as NASA plans a Moon base.
