A new analysis led by the Southwest Research Institute, based on observations from NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, suggests that liquid nitrogen may be moving upward through cracks from deep beneath Pluto's Sputnik Planitia glacier and reaching the surface. This finding indicates that Pluto could be more geologically active than previously thought and provides the first evidence of liquid flow on its surface in relatively recent times.
