NSF Awards $18.4 Million for Project to Sequence Antarctic Genomes, Creating Extensive Genetic Database
The National Science Foundation has awarded $18.4 million to a scientific collaboration, including UC Berkeley and UConn, to produce an extensive genetic database of Antarctic lifeforms. The "Genome Infrastructure catalyzing next Generation Antarctic Data, Access, Tools, and Analytics" (GIGA DATA) project will sequence over 250 Antarctic species' genomes, from algae and mosses to marine mammals, and 600 ecosystem samples. This initiative aims to provide fundamental insights into how life has evolved and adapted to extreme conditions, utilizing AI and machine-learning tools for data analysis.
