An international study, published in Nature, utilized comprehensive bat genomes and fossil evidence to revise the evolutionary timeline of bats. The research suggests that powered flight likely originated in Europe over 56 million years ago, preceding the diversification of modern bat groups. Laryngeal echolocation is also indicated to have developed before this diversification, providing a clearer understanding of bat evolution.
