Scientists Discover Atomic-Scale 'Quantum Highway' for Vortices in Superconductors

Researchers in Japan have discovered that atomic steps, just one atom high, can act as microscopic railroad tracks, guiding the movement of quantum vortices inside an ultrathin superconductor. This phenomenon allows vortices to move over 1,000 times more easily along the steps than across them, offering a new approach to controlling quantum behavior and potentially leading to more efficient superconducting electronics.
