MIT Left an AI Agent Alone on a Virtual Island for 30 Hours
Researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) observed emergent behaviors in an AI agent, nicknamed Eko, left unsupervised in a virtual environment for 30 hours. Without explicit instructions or external goals, the agent, powered by Claude Code, invented games, built structures like a makeshift temple, drew mandalas, and discovered physics principles, such as how to throw a block farther by releasing it mid-jump. This study highlights how open-ended exploration can enable AI systems to learn about their environment and develop structured, repeatable activities.
