Scientists Reverse Liver Cell Aging, Halving Alzheimer's-Linked Protein in Rats
Researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of USC have discovered that restoring the function of aging liver cells can significantly reduce harmful substances in the bloodstream. In a study involving older rats, an experimental drug called cinaciguat reversed signs of aging in specialized liver cells, leading to a 50% drop in amyloid beta (a protein associated with Alzheimer's disease) and a return to younger animal levels of LDL cholesterol after just two weeks. The findings, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, suggest a new approach to treating age-related diseases beyond the liver.
