Cale Makar Becomes Highest-Paid Player in NHL History with Eight-Year, $163.2 Million Contract

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar has signed an eight-year, $163.2 million contract extension, making him the first player in NHL history to earn more than $20 million per year. The deal, which begins in the 2027-28 season, will pay the 27-year-old $20.4 million annually through the 2034-35 campaign. Makar has won the Norris Trophy twice and the Conn Smythe Trophy, leading the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup title in 2022.
