NHL Stars Achieve Milestones and Key Players Suffer Injuries at Start of 2026-27 Season

Evgeni Malkin became the second 40-year-old in NHL history to score in each of his team's first two games, while Kris Letang recorded his 900th career point and Sidney Crosby tied Joe Thornton for seventh all-time in assists. Additionally, Florida Panthers' Aleksander Barkov sustained a leg injury, and New York Rangers' Joonas Korpisalo is week-to-week on injured reserve. Jiri Kulich of the Buffalo Sabres scored his first goal since returning from a blood clot.

Context

The 2026-27 NHL season has begun with notable performances from established stars like Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Sidney Crosby, who are all making significant contributions to their teams. These milestones come as the league continues to evolve, with younger players emerging alongside seasoned veterans. Injuries to players like Aleksander Barkov and Joonas Korpisalo add an element of unpredictability to the early season.

Why it matters

The achievements of veteran players highlight the ongoing talent and longevity in the NHL, which can inspire younger players and engage fans. Milestones like these can also impact team dynamics and playoff aspirations. Conversely, injuries to key players may affect team performance and standings early in the season.

Implications

Injuries to key players could lead to shifts in team strategies and affect overall league competitiveness. Teams may need to adjust their lineups and tactics, potentially giving younger players more opportunities. The success of veteran players could influence contract negotiations and future team compositions, as organizations weigh the value of experience against emerging talent.

What to watch

Fans and analysts will be monitoring the recovery progress of injured players, particularly Barkov and Korpisalo, to gauge their potential return timelines. The performance of veteran players as the season progresses will also be closely observed, especially in relation to their teams' success. Additionally, the impact of Kulich's return on the Buffalo Sabres' lineup may be significant.
