New York State Imposes One-Year Moratorium on Hyperscale Data Center Development

New York has become the first state to impose a one-year moratorium on the construction of large data centers, specifically targeting hyperscale facilities designed for AI and cloud computing infrastructure that use 50 megawatts of energy or more. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order to assess the environmental impact, energy demand, water use, and other factors of such data centers, aiming to create a regulatory framework during this pause.
