European Commission Orders Google to Open Android AI Features and Share Search Data Under Digital Markets Act
The European Commission has issued two legally binding decisions under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), requiring Google to enhance interoperability for competing AI assistants on Android devices and to share anonymized Google Search data with eligible third-party search providers. This initiative aims to foster competition in the AI assistant and search markets. As a result, rival AI assistants will gain access to functions primarily available to Google's own services, including Gemini, enabling users to activate them via voice commands and perform actions within apps. Google is mandated to begin sharing search data with eligible providers from January 2027, with Android interoperability measures expected to benefit users from July 2027.
