IBM Connects First Modular Cryogenic Systems Towards Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing

IBM has successfully joined and cooled down two cryogenic modules into a single environment, a significant step towards building a modular, shared, and ultra-cold system capable of linking hundreds of quantum chips. This new architecture is designed to scale for IBM Quantum Starling, projected to be the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. The combined modules can cool to 4 Kelvin in under five days, reaching below 15 millikelvin shortly after, and offer increased wiring space for chip-to-chip connections.
