OpenAI Expands into Chip Design, Undercutting Open-Source Rivals on Cost

OpenAI is extending its AI capabilities into specialized industries like chip design, life sciences, and financial services, according to CFO Sarah Friar. The company is also aggressively pricing its services, including an 80% price cut on its Luna model, to gain a cost advantage over open-source alternatives and accelerate enterprise growth. OpenAI successfully used its own models to design its "Jalapeno" chip within nine months.
