Pentagon Counsel Proposes Renaming Department of Defense to Department of War

The Pentagon's Office of General Counsel has formally proposed legislation to change the Department of Defense's name to the Department of War. This initiative follows a September 2025 executive order by President Trump, which had already permitted the use of 'Department of War' as an alternative designation. The proposed statutory change is estimated to incur rebranding costs of $50 million.
