U.S. Supreme Court Decisions Drastically Limit Compassionate Release for Federal Prisoners

The U.S. Supreme Court issued two decisions, in *Fernandez v. United States* and *Carter/Rutherford v. United States*, which have been criticized by advocates for drastically limiting opportunities for compassionate release for individuals serving lengthy federal prison sentences. Families Against Mandatory Minimums Foundation (FAMM) stated these rulings will make it harder to correct "unconscionable" sentences imposed before the First Step Act.
