President Trump Adjusts Tariffs on Steel, Aluminum, and Copper Imports to Bolster Domestic Manufacturing
President Donald J. Trump has signed a Proclamation to modify certain metals tariffs, aiming to address national security concerns, stimulate investment in American agriculture, housing, and manufacturing, and boost U.S. production of related goods. The adjustments include reducing tariffs on agricultural equipment, such as combines and harvesters, from 25% to 15%. Additionally, the existing 15% tariff category for industrial equipment will be expanded to encompass mobile industrial equipment, like bulldozers and forklifts, when imported from countries with trade agreements. Foreign companies can also qualify for a 10% duty rate if their capital equipment contains at least 85% U.S. melted and poured or smelted and cast steel or aluminum by weight. These tariff changes are temporary, set to last until December 31, 2027, with the goal of encouraging near-term investments to rebuild the nation's industrial base.
