Energy Department Considers Converting Surplus Plutonium to Fuel

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy is in advanced negotiations to potentially convert nearly 20 metric tons of surplus plutonium. This material could be transformed into advanced nuclear fuel or utilized for advanced reactor research and development. This initiative follows a May 2025 executive order aimed at bolstering domestic fuel supply.
