DHS Changes Admission Rules for Student and Exchange Visitors

The Department of Homeland Security has finalized a new regulation altering the admission period for F, J, and I nonimmigrants, including academic students and exchange visitors. Instead of an indefinite "duration of status," these individuals will now be granted fixed admission periods of up to four years. This change, effective September 15, 2026, will require nonimmigrants to seek extensions from USCIS if they need to stay longer.
