USDA Announces Phased Reopening of Southern Ports for Livestock Trade Contingent on Mexico's Adherence to Joint Action Plan

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a coordinated, phased reopening of southern cattle ports, beginning with the Douglas, AZ port of entry on August 24, 2026. This reopening is contingent on Mexico's adherence to a Joint Action Plan to control the spread of New World screwworm (NWS). All animals entering through these ports will undergo full USDA inspection. The closure of these ports for the past year was a measure to protect the American livestock industry from NWS.
